The Great Outdoors

For the second weekend in a row (following last Sunday morning's hike) we headed out for an outdoor adventure. When it's 55 degrees on December 3rd, why not?

This morning Ellie and I went down to the Blue Hills reservation (a big nature reserve nestled between Boston, Milton, and Quincy) and visited its Trailside Museum. It features a lot of native animals that Ellie had fun visiting.

This duck was just hanging out on the path -- totally unafraid of people -- waiting for food. There's a little dispenser nearby.. and after we tossed it some pellets it tried to eat my shoelaces. Ellie thought that was hilarious. "Silly ducky! Shoes are not food!"

In addition to those white tailed deer.. there are some owls, hawks, otters, foxes, and turkey vultures.

Inside the museum Ellie enjoyed listening to a lady read the story "Owl Moon".. and then having her introduce her (and the other kids) to that little screech owl. I even learned something new: that owls' wings are totally silent when they flap. I thought they were just really quiet.. but no. Silent. Part of the reason they're very good night time hunters. The woman demonstrated this by flapping real hawk, eagle, and owl wings as the animals do in real life for comparison.

Also inside the museum are more native creatures like possums, skunks, snakes, frogs and toads, mice and rats, and fish.

It was a pretty fun morning. This afternoon we're all heading to the zoo to see Santa and the animals' Christmas lights.
